The term 'middle class' is often thrown around, but what does it really mean to be part of this social group? Is it about clothes, vocabulary, or demeanor? As someone who has recently become aware of their middle-class status, I'm on a mission to uncover the truth.

Growing up in Denmark, social classes were never a major concern. But since moving to the UK three years ago, I've become painfully aware of my supposedly middle-class habits. My boyfriend lovingly teases me about my taste in food, dress sense, and vocabulary, while some friends have even poked fun at my apparent middle-class tendencies. So, what does it mean to be middle class?

To start with, the dictionary definition doesn't provide much clarity. The social group between the upper and working classes, including professional and business people and their families? That sounds vague to me. I've always been good with budgeting and bargain hunting, so adjusting to a student income hasn't been too challenging. However, giving up shopping at Waitrose (their veggies are lovely, even if they do overcharge for milk) and treating myself to Nescafé Gold every morning has been a significant sacrifice.

As an undergraduate student living in the UK, I've had to adapt quickly to a new reality. My monthly educational grant from Denmark helps, but it's still not enough to sustain my old middle-class habits. This has made me acutely aware of social classes and how they operate in British society. My dual nationality – English and Danish – means I've grown up with two cultural influences, but the concept of social class has only recently become apparent.

So, what does it mean to be middle class? Is it about your clothes, food choices, or language? Or is there something more profound at play? As someone who's just discovered their own middle-class status, I'm still trying to figure out the answer. Perhaps the truth lies in a combination of these factors, or maybe it's something entirely different.

Whatever the case, being aware of social classes has made me realize that even small changes can have a significant impact on our daily lives. As someone who's always been comfortable with their budget, I've had to adapt quickly to a new reality. And while it's not always easy, it's also an opportunity to learn and grow.

In the end, being middle class might be more about cultural conditioning than we realize. But by acknowledging these influences, we can take control of our own social status and make conscious choices that reflect our values and beliefs. So, am I upper middle class? Maybe. Possibly. Who knows? All I know is that it's a label that doesn't define me, but rather a part of the journey to self-discovery and growth.
